Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is an annual Islamic holiday celebrated on the 1st of Shawwal in the Islamic or Hijri calendar. This date coincides with the end of Ramadan, when Muslims are required to fast for 29 to 30 days or one month. Before Eid al-Fitr, Muslims must also pay zakat, which is obligatory alms during Ramadan. On the eve of Eid al-Fitr, the Takbir of Eid al-Fitr begins to be chanted in mosques. The next morning, Muslims recite the intention of Eid al-Fitr prayer to perform the Eid al-Fitr prayer and listen to the Eid al-Fitr sermon. Then, Eid al-Fitr greetings are heard everywhere as Muslims wish each other a happy Eid al-Fitr with the phrase: Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum or ‘May Allah accept our deeds and yours’.
History
Eid al-Fitr was first celebrated in the 2nd year of Hijrah or 624 AD, coinciding with the end of the Battle of Badr. In this battle, the smaller Muslim force was able to achieve victory over the much larger Quraysh pagan army. The Battle of Badr also took place during Ramadan: when Muslims were performing the fast. Therefore, Eid al-Fitr is also called "The Day of Victory" because Muslims achieved two victories at once, victory in the Battle of Badr and victory against desires after a month of fasting. Since then, the Takbir of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Fitr greetings are heard everywhere.
As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia also celebrates Eid al-Fitr, popularly known as Lebaran. Along with Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr is a major holiday for Indonesian Muslims, including Eid al-Fitr 2024 in the coming year. Eid al-Fitr 2024 is a moment to gather again with family. Various preparations have been made well in advance to chant the Takbir of Eid al-Fitr in the hometown. In the two to one week before Eid al-Fitr, Indonesian Muslims who migrate to big cities perform the tradition of going back to their hometowns (mudik). After performing the Eid prayer with the intention of Eid al-Fitr prayer and the Eid al-Fitr sermon, wishing a happy Eid al-Fitr or the popular greeting of Eid al-Fitr Minal aidin walfaidzin becomes a popular Eid al-Fitr phrase in Indonesia. Every house also provides a special dish of ketupat. After the Eid al-Fitr prayer and sermon are finished, the community visits neighbors or relatives for silaturahmi or halal bihalal and asks for forgiveness.

Important Cities
With a majority Muslim population, many cities in Indonesia have unique Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Here are some of them.
- Yogyakarta: The community in Yogyakarta knows the tradition of Grebeg Syawal, a parade of fruits or vegetables held in the square around the Kraton. Grebeg, which comes from the Javanese word gumrebeg or ‘crowded’, is a symbol of Eid al-Fitr greetings and the generosity of the Sultan of Yogyakarta to his people.
- Solo: Along with Grebeg Syawal, Surakarta or Solo has the tradition of Sungkeman Pangabekten performed on Eid al-Fitr. This tradition is a symbol of Eid al-Fitr greetings from the people to the royal family members to the king at the Surakarta Palace.
- Jakarta: The Betawi people, the native inhabitants of Jakarta, have the tradition of Ruwahan, which is the recitation of the Qur'an verses on the eve of Eid al-Fitr to pray for deceased family members. This tradition is interspersed with communal eating with typical Betawi dishes such as sayur gabus pucung, semur, and pecak fish. The next morning after reciting the intention of Eid al-Fitr prayer for the Eid prayer, the community prays and visits the graves of their family members.
- Cirebon: The community in Cirebon often fills the Kasepuhan Palace complex to watch the Sekaten Gamelan drumming. This gamelan playing tradition is usually done after the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Historically, this gamelan is only played twice a year, namely Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. Sekaten or Syahadatain Gamelan is a symbol of the spread of Islam in Cirebon carried out by the cleric named Sunan Gunung Jati.
- Bengkulu: In Sumatra, specifically Bengkulu, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with the tradition of Bakar Gunungan. This unique tradition is performed by the Bengkulu community on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. In front of their respective homes, people in Serawai in Bengkulu burn coconut shells skewered like satay as a symbol of gratitude to Allah and also a prayer for deceased family members.
